The San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce announced Sunday it is canceling the 2021 Chinese New Year Festival & Parade due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The parade had been scheduled for mid-February, but the Chamber of Commerce said it is making the decision to cancel it because of COVID-19 safety concerns.
Parade Director Harlan Wong told KCBS Radio that organizers are adapting to ring in the Year of the Ox.
“We think that it is our responsibility to not have the live parade,” he said. “So, we’re doing, instead of the live Chinese New Year Parade, we’re going to have a recorded parade, a special.”
Organizers are also considering locations to display the floats for the public to view up close and in-person.
“We will display them and people can walk up to them and look at them,” Wong said. “There’s a small possibility that we may even provide a photo op.”
The San Francisco Chinese New Year celebration is the largest of its kind outside of Asia.
The Parade Broadcast Special will air on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. on television and online. A pre-show special will also be streamed prior to the main event.
