Senior year of high school is one of the most exciting times in a young person’s life, and the class of 2021 has missed out on many seminal events.

“The prom, the dances, the social events in the courtyard, homecoming, the games – everything that you can think of, these kids have missed out on this opportunity in their lives,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed.

But there is one thing they will get to experience in person.

“I can’t think of nothing more important than making sure they don’t miss out on the chance to walk across that stage and get their diploma,” said Breed.

She says things have improved enough in the city to hold graduations in person.

“We’re in a better place. We’re not taking anything for granted, but we’re confident we can make this work safely.”

The city is partnering with the school district to make graduations happen outdoors by offering venues like Kezar Stadium, so schools can hold staggered ceremonies from June 1-3.

Students will sit six feet apart, and so will ‘pods’ of their families with up to four guests per student.

“I can’t even imagine how difficult it’s been. It’s been difficult for the entire city, but I think it’s been incredibly difficult for our children not being in school in most cases, and so this is why this was important that we did something special to accommodate an incredible achievement in their lives,” said the mayor.

“I can’t imagine what they’ve gone through, but I hope this puts a smile on their face.”
