San Francisco's school district reveals plan to return secondary students to classrooms

The San Francisco Unified School District has updated its reopening plan to include secondary students.

SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews shared an update at Tuesday's school board meeting.

Just as prior plans stated, students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade would begin to return to classrooms on April 12. Under the updated plan, on April 26, select middle and high school students would start to return to campuses. New students, students demonstrating limited online engagement, homeless students, foster youth and students in public housing would be given the opportunity to return to classrooms first.

District officials announced that more than 20,000 of its roughly 56,000 students are expected to be back on campus by the end of April.

School sites must be approved by the city's Department of Public Health before reopening.

SFUSD has sent more than 2,000 assignment letters to teachers and paraeducators, asking them to return to in-person learning in the first three waves of the reopening plan, officials said.

So far, 274 employees, or 13% of staff who have been asked to return to campuses, have requested to work remotely this spring, according to the district.

The new plan was announced just days after a judge said he would soon decide whether to grant a preliminary injunction San Francisco's city attorney has sought to force schools to reopen sooner.

Classrooms have been closed for over a year in San Francisco due to the coronavirus pandemic.
