The board claims the approved layoffs and cut classes are to help offset a budget deficit, KPIX reported.

City college teachers and students joined the debate to voice their opinions and concerns about the proposed cuts, according to the news station.

Alan Wong is the only trustee to vote against the cuts, the station said.

Thirty-eight full-time teachers will be laid off and the college will stop the re-hiring of 138 part-time teachers next school year.

On Tuesday, students and teachers camped out in front of City College's student services building to protest the layoffs and class cuts. Police arrested 10 protesters for blocking the street on Thursday, KPIX reported.

In 2012, City College had 73,000 students but in 2013 the school almost lost its accreditation. Currently, student enrollment is less than 25,000, the news station said.

College officials told KPIX that the school may be forced to shut down if they do not fix their budget problems.
