Christopher Liang was reported missing last week after his brother Jerry Liang reported that no one in their family had heard from Christopher since Monday.
Christopher had embarked on an impromptu trip to Irvine last week, as previously reported by KCBS Radio.
He rented a 2020 Tesla Model 3 for the journey, which was discovered overturned in a ravine just outside Los Banos by the California Highway Patrol on Saturday, according to a report of the incident. A witness was able to guide authorities to the scene on Panoche Road west of I-5 southbound, according to the report. Firefighters arrived on the scene and were able to locate a deceased person in the overturned car, later identified as Liang.
The cause for the crash was undetermined, except the car "ran off the road for an unknown reason," said the report.
Due to the lack of witnesses to the crash, authorities say it could have happened anytime between Monday, Feb. 28 and last Saturday.
Liang's brother wrote in an emotional Instagram post since his brother went missing that the family has been worried about his state of mind.
"The erratic nature of this trip combined with his mental health issues has made our family extremely concerned for his safety," said the post written last week. "This is his first time driving since he got his license in March and he has never booked a hotel in his life."
"I'm terrified and heartbroken," he said. Liang's car had been offline, as well as his phone and social media, since Monday, making it difficult to locate him.
The cause of death has not yet been verified, according to Fresno County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Tony Botti.
