Health experts at San Francisco General Hospital can finally report that monkeypox cases are going down and vaccine supply is way up.
On Tuesday, SF General administered over 300 monkeypox vaccinations, announcing on Twitter that drop-ins are welcome, as long as they have supply of the vaccine.
This positive change is a stark contrast from late July and early August when San Francisco residents were scrambling to get vaccinated as the city ran out of shots.
Andy and Daniel both recently got their first dose. “I want everyone to get protection that needs it. We know the vaccine isn’t bulletproof immunity, we still have to be careful,” they told KCBS Radio.
After two months of rapid spread, monkeypox cases are now on the decline. There were only five new cases last week in San Francisco compared to 143 in late July. Health officials are cautiously optimistic the outbreak may finally be waning.
SF Health Director Grant Colfax told KCBS Radio it certainly helped that the White House declared monkeypox a public health emergency. “We were really pleased to see that there were two leaders that the administration had appointed to coordinate the national monkeypox response,” he said.
Meanwhile, cases across the state and in other big cities like New York are also trending down. But, health experts warn monkeypox could spike up again, similar to COVID-19 outbreaks.
