A San Francisco man died on Wednesday while exploring a trail in Death Valley National Park.

Temperatures in Death Valley have skyrocketed in the past month, reaching record levels of 130 degrees.

Lawrence Stanbeck, 60, died on Aug. 18 while hiking alone along the Golden Canyon Trail near Red Cathedral.

According to officials, park rangers received a report of a suspected heat stroke Wednesday afternoon, when temperatures reached 108 degrees, and set out on foot to look for Stanbeck.

When they located the San Francisco hiker he had already died.

To avoid heat stroke or death, park rangers encourage visitors to walk in the early hours of the morning until 10 a.m. or at higher altitudes. Travelers should drink plenty of water, eat snacks and try to cool down when needed.
