The Mission Food Hub and the San Francisco LowRider Council teamed up Sunday to deliver toys to families in need this holiday season.

Many of those who received the gifts don't have any money for presents this year because of COVID-19.

"We’re doing this toy distribution for families who’ve got no money,” said Roberto Hernandez, director of the Mission Food Hub. “Literally, people have no money today. Every day, I hear in the food line, ‘we’re behind 5 months, 6 months, 9 months in rent’.”

Hernandez got the lowrider club to deliver toys to families in isolation who couldn’t come to pick up their gifts.

One man piled toys for six families into his 1946 Chevy.

“You know, some of us still work, still have a job, and there’s others that don’t,” he said.  “It’s really tight for them, so however we can help each other out – I like it.”

Another volunteer, who also delivered toys to six families, said it felt good to help out.

“We can’t celebrate with our families, you know, and there’s people that are staying at home with their families and they just can’t get out and work,” she told KCBS Radio. “So, it’s some kind of joy, for someone’s family.”
