A recent increase in crime could deter tourists from visiting San Francisco as the city battles to revive its economy amid reopening.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed has noticed a spree of car break-ins since the city’s reopening on June 15. The infractions are “sad and heartbreaking” she said, calling the issue “ongoing.”

The city is looking forward to the upcoming holiday weekend, where San Francisco will hold the only fireworks show in all of the Bay Area, however, Mayor Breed also has a message for visitors.

“I do think it’s important that people are very careful,” she said. “Do not leave any valuables in your car, do not park your car and then put something in the trunk because that can be problematic.”

As people drive in to enjoy Sunday night’s fireworks celebration on the waterfront, Breed encourages them to “just be mindful of your environment.”

Repeat offenders of the car break-ins have been arrested and are being held accountable.

Breed explained that the ultimate goal is to “make sure that people have a good time and to keep everyone safe.”
