SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – With illegal sideshows threatening public safety in the Bay Area, some San Francisco leaders want police to start using new technology to crack down on dangerous stunt driving.

In early April, sideshows broke out in Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco. At least five people were arrested and police impounded dozens of vehicles in all three cities.

San Francisco supervisors, including Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, are now encouraging the SF Police Department to implement high tech drones in their fight against the illegal shows. The drones would be a birds eye view, surveying the shows and identifying vehicles for impounding.

To introduce drones, police department rules would need to be updated. "I think it is clear that we have significant public safety needs and that we've got to fund them," Mandelman said.

Any changes to the drone rules would have to be approved by supervisors. Oakland and Los Angeles both allow police to use unmanned aerial devices for surveillance.
