Between March 18 and April 10, 10 smash-and-grab thefts occurred across San Francisco with multiple locations targeted more than once, police said.
Authorities believe the three teens, boys ages 14, 15 and 16, were involved in a majority of the robberies, occurring March 18, March 20, March 24, March 27, twice on March 30, April 2, April 3, April 8 and April 10.
In most of the incidents, a large group of suspects entered a retail store and made their way behind the front counter. They then would flee with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.
A customer and employee were also assaulted during the thefts when they tried to intervene. The customer confronted one of the suspects and was assaulted, while in a separate incident an employee, who was taking a video of the theft, was dragged into the street and had his phone stolen.
It was not immediately clear what charges the 14, 15 and 16-year-old boys are facing. Some of the suspects in these incidents remain outstanding, the department said.
The San Francisco Police Department announced the arrests on Wednesday, a day after voters in the city opted to recall District Attorney Chesa Boudin. Recall proponents argued Boudin didn't do enough to address crime in San Francisco, pointing in part to viral videos of smash-and-grab thefts and robberies.
KCBS Radio has reached out to the San Francisco Police Department regarding the arrests but has not yet heard back.
