In a video posted to Instagram on April 1, an officer is seen on Clement Street walking up to a Cruise car only to discover there was no driver behind the wheel.
Witnesses to the bizarre incident can be heard in the background laughing and enjoying the show. "Ain't nobody in it," one man said. "Oh my god, I have to watch this," another woman exclaimed.
After the officer walked back to his patrol car, the Cruise vehicle is seen driving off through an intersection before pulling over once more and turning its hazard lights on.
In a Twitter post, Cruise explained that the car kept driving to find a safer place to stop. "Our AV yielded to the police vehicle, then pulled over to the nearest safe location for the traffic stop, as intended," the company wrote.
As self-driving vehicles take hold in San Francisco, incidents like this may become more commonplace.
According to Cruise, the officer contacted the company and did not end up issuing a ticket. "We work closely with the SFPD on how to interact with our vehicles, including a dedicated phone number for them to call in situations like this," Cruise said. It is unknown why the car was pulled over.
