Over the weekend Campos, who is running against current Supervisor Matt Haney, spoke at a campaign event and was captured on video and posted by The Marina Times on Twitter.

In the video, Campos compares his election campaign for the state assembly seat to the conflict in Ukraine.

"There is some connection, you know, to Ukraine, because we are fighting and running like Ukrainians," he said. "We are up against the odds."

Despite the backlash on social media, Campos has doubled down on the remarks and connected it to his family's experience fleeing Guatemala's civil war and being a self-described "underdog," he wrote in a Twitter post on Saturday.

"For so many people throughout the world, the Ukrainian people are a source of inspiration," he said. "And I don't think there's anything wrong with expressing admiration for that."

Campos' opponent, Matt Haney, thinks Campos should apologize for his comments.

There's really just absolutely no comparison between what they're doing and what they're fighting for and what they're going through, and David Campos' political campaign to get elected to office," said Haney. "I find it offensive."

Voting for the special election in San Francisco is underway for the state Assembly seat left vacant by David Chiu when he became San Francisco's City Attorney.

The election will be held on April 19th.
