Now that California Assemblymember David Chiu has been tapped to become the next San Francisco City Attorney, his district, District 17, will soon need representation.
Current San Francisco Supervisor Matt Haney has thrown his hat into the ring in an announcement Monday morning.

"I'm not afraid to take on our toughest challenges. Whether it’s getting people into housing, cleaning up our streets, or delivering for small businesses, I've found new solutions that make a real impact," Haney wrote in a Twitter thread of his announcement. "I'm running for Assembly because I want to deliver for SF on an even bigger scale."
Assembly District 17 covers much of the eastern half of San Francisco, from Visitacion and Bernal Heights to Telegraph Hill and Treasure Island.
Haney would become only the third renter out of the state’s 120 members, which he highlighted in his post. "There is an obvious and urgent need for more renters and tenants’ rights leaders serving in the state legislature," he wrote.
A Bay Area resident since childhood, Haney represents District 6, which includes the Tenderloin, Civic Center, Mid-Market, SOMA, Yerba Buena, Rincon Hill, South Beach, Mission Bay, and Treasure Island. Prior to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, Haney served at various times as Commissioner, President and Vice President of the San Francisco Board of Education.
"I’ve been fighting for progressive policy for the last 15 years," said Haney in an interview with KCBS Radio. "I represent a district that really suffers when we don’t have bigger state solutions to certain problems like homelessness or housing affordability."
If elected, Haney said he plans to bring solutions. "That’s going to take leaders who are problem solvers, who are going to jump right in and get results," he said. "That’s what I’ll go up and do in Sacramento."
The special election is likely to take place in early 2022.
