San Francisco Mayor London Breed has announced a new lead for the city’s Department on the Status of Women.
Kimberly Ellis, a longtime progressive activist and former Executive Director of Emerge California, will serve as director of the agency, which was established in 1994 to carry out policy and mission for the Commission on the Status of Women. According to the news release, Ellis " is progressive activist who has fought for the rights and representation of historically underrepresented groups on the local, state, and national level."
I am deeply honored to serve at the helm of this legendary institution. Thank you, Mayor @LondonBreed, President Breanna Zwart & Commission Members for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

"Kimberly is a tireless advocate for those who are too often overlooked in our society, and I know that in this role she will continue that work by improving the lives of women and girls in San Francisco," Breed said. "We know that the COVID-19 pandemic is disproportionately impacting women, exacerbating disparities that already existed beforehand. That’s why the work of the Department on the Status of Women remains more important than ever and why I’m proud that Kimberly will be leading it for years to come."
The department’s goal is to ensure the equitable treatment and foster the advancement of the women and girls in San Francisco through programs, policies and legislation.
Ellis received a law degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Jacksonville University. She lives in the Bay Area.
