SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Joanne Segovia, 64, who had served as the office manager for the San Jose Police Officers Association until her arrest on drug trafficking charges, is in court for the first time Friday afternoon.

Federal prosecutors are alleging that Segovia had been importing and distributing opioid drugs for more than seven years before her arrest.

They are also alleging that she used office resources – including her work computer – to carry out the illicit activity.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has called the allegations "incredibly disturbing."

"It's a real scourge in the community, both fentanyl and meth are a huge problem," he said. "And to have somebody kind of on the inside, if you will, being alleged to have been importing it is just devastating."

"Yeah, it's incredibly disturbing," he added.

In a statement, union officials asserted that no one in the union had any knowledge of the alleged acts, and that Segovia has been placed on leave.

The official complaint alleges that Segovia imported more than 60 shipments of pills from around the world to her home.

She then allegedly distributed the pills through the mail all over the country labeled as different gifts or treats.

Segovia is facing as many as 20 years in prison if convicted.
