Health officials in Solano County have reported one of the Bay Area's first cases of flu and COVID-19 co-infection.
The Solano County Department of Health and Social Services confirmed the case in a person under age 65 via a news release Thursday.
"With the likelihood of both COVID-19 and seasonal flu activity this winter, contracting either disease may weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to the other disease," said Dr. Bela T. Matyas, Solano County Health Officer.
As flu season gets underway, many health experts have cautioned about COVID-19's continuing impact, including the possibility of contracting both viruses at once during a "twindemic."
However, not much is yet known about whether one could make the other worse.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting Solano County could slide backward into California's most restrictive tier as soon as next week. That would be a first for a Bay Area county, where COVID-19 restrictions continued to loosen this week.
Health officials told the paper that several "huge, inappropriate gatherings" by county residents in recent weeks are largely to blame, including a funeral of 300 attendees, a wedding, a christening and an event at a private ranch.
