Sonoma County appointed a new interim public defender on Friday who will take over for Kathleen Pozzi starting next week.
Chief Administrator Sheryl Bratton announced the appointment of Jeff Mitchell, Sonoma County’s chief deputy public defender, as interim public defender on Sept. 3.
Mitchell has served the Sonoma County Public Defender’s Office since 1995.
"During his 26 years, Jeff has handled every type of case that the office is appointed on,” said Bratton. “He has distinguished himself as a respected leader and public defender in all aspects of felony, misdemeanor and juvenile cases.”
Following the retirement of Pozzi, who has been the county public defender since 2012, Mitchell will take over on Sept. 10.
The Sonoma County Public Defender's Office represents anyone in Superior Court who risks losing their liberty because they are unable to afford an attorney.
