Sonoma Square hosted truly a special evening Sunday as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate Independence Day.

Many of the patrons arrived early in the day to picnic, camp and do other various activities with their friends and family.

The massive fireworks show started later that evening, and was met with people screaming and hollering while others jumped for joy.

“It’s so exciting to be here on the Fourth of July, a special day for our country years ago. We’re celebrating with our friends and just to be with this whole community after being locked up,” a woman attending the event told KCBS Radio. “It brings back childhood memories, with our own children going to fireworks. Seeing all these children around here enjoying the fireworks is fun, just having a good time.”

The pyrotechnic show was the largest such display that Sonoma has had in decades, KCBS Radio was told. The fireworks went high into the sky with all kinds of brilliant colors.

“It’s great to be here in the park, just celebrating the Fourth with all these people and after the year of COVID, just connecting again with the people and community,” a man at the celebration told KCBS Radio.
