State Senator Josh Becker of Menlo Park is calling on California’s health department to boost COVID-19 vaccinations in several poorer San Mateo County communities.

“We need to get you one-third vaccinated in communities like East Palo Alto, North fair Oaks and Bellhaven, very quickly,” he told KCBS Radio.

East Palo Alto, according to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, has a vaccination rate of 24%, while in wealthy Atherton the figure is 75%.

“When you’re one-third vaccinated, then the chances are you’re going to know somebody who has been vaccinated,” Becker said.

And that person, explains the senator, may encourage you to get the shot yourself. Too many people are falling through the cracks, he said, not eligible for a vaccine yet.

“A house cleaner, construction worker, gardener are not included,” he noted. “Secondly, many work informally, say taking care of kids.”

Becker said he wants everyone in those three communities made eligible right away.
