A Stockton fire captain was fatally shot while responding to a blaze in the city on Monday morning.
The shooting occurred in the area at 142 S. Aurora St at approximately 5:02 a.m, Interim Police Chief Jim Chraska told reporters. The victim was identified as 47-year-old Vidal "Max" Fortuna, a member of Stockton's fire department for 21 years.
Fortuna and other crew members from Engine 2 were responding to a dumpster fire in the area of Aurora Street and Washington streets, police said.
A 67-year-old suspect has been detained and officers also recovered a firearm at the scene. Detectives continue to investigate what led up to the shooting.
No other details about the incident were released.
Fortuna is survived by his wife and two adult children.
