You have to see it to believe it.

Highway 1 at Rat Creek south of Esalen along the Big Sur coast washed completely out - and as of now there is no expected timeline for repairing it. The damage looked to have taken place over the course of a few days.

Highway 1 in Big Sur will remain closed to all traffic until further notice, according to Caltrans. Crews will begin to assess damage, cleanup and repairs Friday.

Caltrans officials said an emergency contractor is on board.

"State Route 1 between MPM 40 and the San Luis Obispo County line continues to be impacted by inclement weather, debris flow, flooding, and slides," said Captain Kyle Foster. "This area is closed to the public. Remain clear of the area and plan alternate routes. Please continue to exercise extreme caution on rural roads, especially at night."

While the road was heavily damaged, much of the coast appeared to have dodged major mudslides, as was feared. The worst damage came in a hillside neighborhood in Salinas, where a mud flow hit several homes.
