SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – The man suspected of stabbing a CLEAR employee at San Francisco International Airport earlier this week is facing assault charges in San Mateo County, but his arraignment has been delayed another day.

The hearing for 48-year-old Samuel Day was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was delayed a day because Day was sick, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's office.

District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe told KCBS Radio in an email on Thursday afternoon that Day refused to leave his county jail cell, and the judge continued Day's case another day.

Wagstaffe said that if Day doesn't appear in court on Friday, he hopes the judge will order the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office to bring Day into the courtroom.

Day faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly stabbed 23-year-old Jose Cocom, an employee for the private travel document company CLEAR, who was working in the baggage claim area of the airport’s Terminal 3 early Tuesday morning. Day was seen running around the luggage carousels with a steak knife before stabbing Cocom once in the back, authorities said.

Cocom was transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital with a two-inch stab wound and treated for injuries which aren't life-threatening. He did not have any prior relationship with Day, according to authorities.

Day was arrested shortly after and did not give an explanation for why he allegedly committed the stabbing. Day's conduct prior to the attack and his apparent lack of motive have led authorities to believe he has mental health issues, prosecutors said.
