California Highway Patrol H-30, San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and California State Parks responded to an incident regarding a hiker who fell off Sentinel Rock on Mount Diablo at around 4:40 p.m., CHP Golden Gate Division Air Operations reported.

CHP helicopter flew above the incident as San Ramon fire and State Parks crews found the climber on foot. CHP said that a San Ramon Valley Fire Helicopter Rescue Technician was lowered from the helicopter to help rescue the man who suffered major injuries from his fall.

The hiker was placed into rescue equipment and then lifted into the helicopter. He was then transferred to another helicopter that took him to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CHP said.

California State Parks told KCBS Radio that there are steps carved into Sentinel Rock leading to the top with a handrail and cables to designate a trail. There is a chance that you can slip on the trail inside the cables but more people fall climbing outside of the cables, the agency said.

It is still unknown if the hiker was inside or outside the cables on the trail before he fell, California State Parks said.

California State Park Rangers are investigating the incident. They are investigating to see if he was inside the safe area provided, how he fell and if something happened that could be prevented in the future, California State Parks explained.
