Police are searching for at least four young men – believed to be in their teens – who hit a railing on the Bay Bridge and then abandoned their vehicle, causing a huge traffic jam on Thursday afternoon.
The California Highway Patrol said it happened just before 1:30 p.m.
The suspects, reportedly Black men dressed in all-black clothing, were swerving their gold four-door sedan at high rate of speed across the bridge’s westbound lanes, officials said. After they hit the side railing, the suspects apparently left their sedan in the roadway and fled the scene on foot.
Initial reports indicated that at least two of the suspects ran toward Yerba Buena Island. A CHP spokesman told KCBS Radio it’s now thought all of the suspects got into a waiting vehicle and drove away.
Both CHP and San Francisco police officers were called to the scene.
No one was hurt. No arrests were made.
Caltrans will inspect the bridge rail and cables after the rush hour.
Traffic was backed up into San Francisco on Highway 101, plus side streets and on-ramps. Vehicles were also jammed back to the toll plaza in Oakland.
