San Rafael Police Officers responded to a report just before noon on Wednesday that a teacher was possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs at Terra Linda High School at 320 Nova Albion Way, according to a release issued by the department.
The report was made after a school staff member alerted an administrator to the issue. The administrator found the teacher, Taegen Leonhart, teaching in her classroom visibly intoxicated.
The administrator removed Leonhart from the classroom and notified the police, who arrived with a "state-certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE)."
Leonhart, 46, of San Anselmo, initially denied having consumed any alcohol that day, but after consenting to a preliminary alcohol screening, she was found to be at a level more than three times the legal driving limit.
Only after officers showed her the test results did she admit to having consumed alcohol earlier in the day. It was also determined that she was under the influence of a prescription drug and cannabis.
Leonhart had been teaching and supervising classes all morning on Wednesday, responsible for 53 kids.
Based on the assessment of the DRE officer, Leonhart was not capable of ensuring the safety of those children while intoxicated.
She has since been booked at the Marin County Jail for public intoxication and child endangerment.
