Tsunami Warning canceled for greater San Francisco Bay Area after several large earthquakes

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A major earthquake struck northern California Thursday morning prompting a tsunami warning along the northern California coast, including the San Francisco Bay Area.

The primary quake was preliminarily rated as a 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Cape Mendocino at around 10:45 a.m.  Several aftershocks of preliminary magnitudes between 3.0 and 5.0 continued for the hours after.


The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for the northern California coast from Santa Cruz up into the southern Oregon coast.

The National Weather Service canceled the warning just before noon Thursday the quakes did not produce a type of wave that would create a tsunami.

The San Francisco Fire Department told KCBS Radio that despite the warning’s cancellation – it is still asking people to stay away from the coasts.

BART had shut down service through the Transbay Tube and in San Francisco briefly Thursday after the earthquake had been detected.
