Two people dead after San Jose church stabbing

One man has been arrested after two people were fatally stabbed Sunday night at a church in San Jose.

San Jose Police said the stabbing happened at the Grace Baptist Church at 484 E. San Fernando St. at about 9 p.m. Sunday. The church is across the street from San Jose State University and just a few blocks from City Hall and often doubles as a shelter.

One man died at the scene and a woman died later at the hospital. Three other men were stabbed and are in the hospital in serious but stable condition.

“We had a very motivated individual that was able to stab five people," said San Jose police Sgt. Christian Camarillo. "This isn’t like a shooting, to stab somebody you have to get up close and personal."

Police said no church services were underway at the time of the stabbing, and that unhoused individuals had been brought to the church due to cold weather conditions. It appears that victims were attacked both inside and outside of the sanctuary.

It's being called "a very active scene" with a heavy police presence still at the scene Monday morning.

Camarillo says the investigation is ongoing and exhaustive, with more than 30 witnesses.

“It’s pretty mellow here most of the time, you don’t expect nothing like that” said Ky, an unhoused man who slept at the church last week.

San Jose police announced Monday morning that a suspect has been arrested although neither the suspect nor victims' identities have been released. The motive is still unclear.
