San Mateo Police are investigating what looks to be a murder-suicide Monday over a reported love triangle.

Officers responded to a 911 call around 7:20 a.m. for a reported shooting death in the 1700 block of Pierce St. in San Mateo, according to police. The victim, a 42-year-old man, was found shot multiple times.

He pronounced dead at the scene.

Minutes after discovering the victim, officers then located the suspect at a home in the 1600 block of Marina Court. When the suspect refused to surrender, a four-hour standoff ensued, and SWAT and a crisis negotiations team were called in to assist.

The suspect took his own life, reportedly while on the phone with officers. Police discovered his body when they sent a robot into the home, according to KPIX 5.

The suspect's wife, who was inside the home at the time, remained unharmed.

The incident is under investigation, including a motive for the apparent murder-suicide.
