Three people were saved by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter late Saturday after becoming stranded on a cliff near Muir Beach in Marin County.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Southern Marin Fire Protection District received reports of people stranded on a cliff at approximately 8:15 p.m.

When they arrived, they found a group of hikers who had strayed too close to the edge of the cliff and had become stuck on a ledge.

A MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew rescued three people from their perilous position at around 9 p.m. while another two members of the group managed to climb up to the top by themselves, officials said.

No injuries were reported.

"Cliff operations are inherently risky for both ground parties and air crew, and are significantly higher risk during nighttime," said Lieutenant Commander Eric Schwartz. "We were glad the conditions allowed us to save three lives alongside our partner agencies."

The Southern Marin fire district cautions hikers to stay away from the edge of cliffs and pay attention to warning signs.
