Mark Meuser, a Constitutional and Election Law Attorney vying to join the senate as a Republican representative of California, was perusing North Beach Sunday after checking out of his hotel. He parked his car in front of a restaurant under a street light, but returned after dinner to find the window of his rental SUV was broken and three backpacks had been stolen.
One of the backpacks had two laptops inside. Meuser told KCBS Radio he was mad, but more broadly he said it’s sad that the government can’t protect the property rights of individuals.
"I've had enough friends that had issues in San Francisco that it’s like, why even bother calling the police?" Meuser asked. "It's not like they can do anything about it."
Smash and grab crimes, which are notorious in San Francisco, have escalated in recent years. In a video posted to Twitter, Meuser blamed the increase in crime on the "progressive liberal agenda that is handcuffing police and letting criminals go free."
The law attorney is now using the incident to fuel his campaign. If he's elected to the U.S. Senate, Meuser promised to require that prosecutors enforce the law. "If we continue to coddle criminals and prosecutors refuse to enforce the laws that are on the books, we no longer live in a republic, we live in a tyranny," he declared.
On May 10, San Francisco law enforcement officials announced that they had busted a major fencing operation run out of a boba tea shop, where car burglars were selling stolen goods on the international market.
