Dozens of UC Berkeley students have contract COVID-19 in the university’s second large outbreak.
44 students tested positive on Saturday, including some students living in campus housing. The university saw an outbreak among 95 students in July, and has had 544 confirmed cases since the fall term began at the end of August.
“All in all I think the university has done a very good job, but it’s impossible to control this virus when you have people not following the basics principles of control: masking, social distancing and not getting together in congregant settings,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, Clinical Professor Emeritus in Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology at Cal.
“Unfortunately, universities and pandemics don’t mix well. Universities, with lots of students living in congregant settings, are a potential source for this virus to just flourish.”
The university is conducting contact tracing and notifying any students who were exposed to the virus that they must now quarantine.
