The exhibit is an immersive showcase of the work of Taras Shevchenko, a 19th Century Ukrainian painter, poet, and spiritual leader considered to be a cultural trailblazer in the country. He was also known for expressing themes of Ukrainian oppression by the Russian government in his work.

"This exhibit talks about his works, about his stories, about emotion, about the feelings about different stages of his life that he has lived and walked through," Valeriy Kostyuk told KCBS Radio. He's a producer with Lighthouse Immersive, the company which created the same Shevchenko event held last year in Odesa, Ukraine, in honor of the 30th anniversary of Ukrainian Independence. The showcase featured scans of pieces that are housed permanently in Ukraine.

"This exhibit is the only exhibit in the world where you can view these works because there’s absolutely no way you can view them in Kiev right now due to the Russian aggression," he said.

Kostyuk said Lighthouse decided to take this show to San Francisco, Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and Boston in the coming months to showcase Ukrainian culture.

The exhibit comes to San Francisco for one night only on March 15 at the SVN West gallery. All proceeds will go to the Red Cross and National Bank of Ukraine Fund.

"We thought this would be a great opportunity for us to show exactly what the Ukrainian culture is and what values we share as the Ukrainian nation that is currently struggling and fighting for freedom," Kostyuk said.

Tickets for the show can be purchased here.
