Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins won't be allowed to play in the team's home games at Chase Center in San Francisco if he isn't vaccinated for COVID-19, according to a report.
Wiggins, who is reportedly unvaccinated, must get his shot or shots 14 days prior to the Warriors' first home game on Oct. 21 in order to be eligible to play.
"At large and mega indoor events, all patrons 12 and older must be vaccinated at this time," the San Francisco Department of Public Health said in a statement first provided to SFGATE. "Under the current order, if unvaccinated, they cannot enter indoor areas regardless of the reason they are unvaccinated and cannot test out of this requirement even if they have a medical or religious exemption. This same rule applies to performers and players employed by the host at large and mega indoor events who are covered by the vaccination requirements of the Health Order."
While the NBA does not mandate players receive a shot, local jurisdictions can override those rules.
San Francisco requires all patrons are vaccinated at large indoor gatherings, which includes events inside the 18,000-seat Chase Center. San Francisco and New York are the only two NBA cities that impose such restrictions.
"As has been the case during the entire pandemic, we will comply with any regulations and protocols put in place by the San Francisco Department of Public Health," the Warriors said in a statement to KCBS Radio on Friday.
The San Francisco Chronicle said there are growing fears within the organization that he won't reverse his reported refusal to get the vaccine. The team recently connected Wiggins with an Oakland doctor "who understands issues surrounding vaccine hesitancy."
Wiggins was the Warriors' second-leading scorer last season behind All-Star Stephen Curry.
