Officials at the University of San Francisco have expelled a student who they say hung a noose from the balcony of his dorm room.
Two Black students spotted the noose hanging from a 4th floor balcony at the school’s Loyola Village Residence Hall on Anza Street last week.
An investigation found that the now-expelled student acted alone in the incident. That student's identity has not been released.
The university had initially removed the student from the dorms after the noose was discovered.
“It is a hurtful incident. It is a shameful incident in so many ways because of the potent history of the noose in the United States. It’s a symbol of domestic terror and it was used as a form of physical terror to lynch,” sad USF Vice Provost Mary Wardell Ghiraduzzi.
KPIX-5 reports the university confirmed the expulsion on Friday.
“The impact caused extraordinary distress, hurt, and fear for health, safety, and well-being,” the university said in a statement. “USF does not and will not tolerate actions that have such an impact, regardless of intent or underlying reasons. For these actions and specific violations of the USF student code of conduct, the student has been expelled from the university, effective immediately.”
“USF condemns all acts of racism including artifacts and weapons that express the legacy of hatred, violence, and racism.”
The school is also providing counseling to any students who desire it.
