Vallejo's City Manager Greg Nyhoff has resigned. He will receive a severance package of nearly $600,000.
According to reporting by NBC Bay Area, Vallejo City Attorney Veronica Nebb said during the council meeting where his resignation was officially accepted that Nyhoff and the city "wish to go our separate ways."
Nyhoff's sudden exit comes amidst multiple scandals and controversies facing the city, such as the revelation that several of its police officers bent the ends of their star-tipped badges after being involved in a fatal shooting with a member of the public.
Activists have claimed that Nyhoff did nothing to stop the practice after he became aware of it.
The agreement stipulates Vallejo will pay Nyhoff the balance of his salary during the final 18 months of his employment with the city of Vallejo.
Assistant City Manager Anne Cardwell will serve as acting city manager until a replacement is found.
