On Tuesday around 7 p.m., San Jose officers responded to reports of a shooting on Mount Shasta Drive, where they uncovered the first victim suffering life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Christian Camarillo, San Jose Police spokesperson, in a press conference on Wednesday.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. A couple of hours later, the same suspect traveled to Modesto, where he shot and killed a woman.

"We're still trying to establish what their relationship was," said Camarillo.

According to reporting by KTVU, the woman was Michelle Rose Gonzales, 29, whose 6-month-old baby, Raymond, is the suspect’s child.

Gonzales had a rollercoaster relationship with the suspect, who reportedly verbally abused her, according to the station.

The Modesto Police Department did not respond to KCBS Radio's request for comment at the time of publication.

After that murder, the suspect traveled back to San Jose, and around 11 p.m. he was spotted by police.

"There was a pursuit through our city," he said. The suspect then abandoned his car after a collision, in the neighborhood of Bendorf and Roundtable. While fleeing on foot, he fired multiple rounds at pursuing officers.

A few minutes before midnight he took refuge in a shed in someone’s backyard in the neighborhood and barricaded himself in for several hours.

At just before 7:30 a.m., the suspect exited the shed and pointed a gun at police. He was shot once and transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

"We want to extend our condolences to all the people involved with this tragic sequence of events," said Camarillo.

Along with the two homicides, police are also looking into a separate event the suspect was involved in in the hours leading up to the standoff, what they believe was a "family disturbance" or some sort, in San Jose.

The San Jose Police Department declined to comment on the identity of the suspect's female victim.
