The mass shooting at the Valley Transportation Authority rail yard in San Jose is starting to have a bigger impact on transit service in Santa Clara County.
Some bus bridges are being discontinued due to a lack of staffing.
Many VTA workers are grieving, attending funerals and supporting each other, and as a result the transit agency said they have less staff available to operate reliable service. Light rail trains remain grounded indefinitely and - as of Tuesday morning - substitute bus service is discontinued.
"We are allowing our employees to take the time they need to grieve to support each other, to attend vigils and eventually attend funerals, tragically" VTA Spokesperson Stacey Hendler Ross said. "So we are not requiring people to come to work if they feel they need the time off."
She told KCBS Radio they are directing all resources to the regular bus network that services the majority of riders, however the limited staffing means even bus service will be less frequent.
"We have a different number of employees calling in to have time off everyday," she added. "We're trying to work with the situation that we have and we're trying to provide service the best we can." Hendler Ross apologized for the inconvenience and asked riders for their patience and understanding during this difficult time.
