Why San Francisco plans to have more police in tourist areas

You might notice a few extra police officers in certain parts of San Francisco.

City officials have launched a new plan to tackle crime in areas with lots of tourists. After months and months of pandemic living, San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Police Chief William Scott said they want residents and visitors to feel safe in the city.

Car break-ins, burglaries and assaults all have risen over the last year, according to data released by the city last week. Breed said it must be addressed to ensure safety to residents and tourists.

"We know we are a big city," she said Monday in a press conference. "We know, sadly, that sometimes things will happen."

The mayor and the San Francisco Police Department on Monday announced the launch of a new tourism deployment plan in response.

"We devised a plan to deploy 26 additional police officers on bicycle and foot patrols," Scott said. "And mainly they will be on the community commercial corridors. Many of these corridors are iconic tourist locations."
