CAL FIRE officials tweeted about the Cache Fire burning off Dam Rd. and Wilkinson Ave. in Clearlake at about 1 p.m. It's already burned between 50-75 acres, Lake County Sheriff Brian Martin told KCBS Radio.
"It looks like we're getting some containment on it. It's not spreading as fast as it was," Martin said of the firefighting efforts.
Martin initially estimated 15 homes had been destroyed by the flames, though cautioned that number had not yet been confirmed. By Wednesday night, he said approximately "four dozen" homes had been destroyed.
There are no plans to increase evacuation orders at this time, though traffic in the area has been jammed as "several thousand people" were ordered to leave all at once, Martin explained.
"School is back in (session), so we had the additional factor of getting a bunch of children out of school while their parents were away at work," he described to KCBS Radio's Megan Goldsby. "So you've got a situation where there's a couple thousand people leaving and a bunch of kids that need to get out on buses, it can become quite hectic."
By Wednesday night, Martin said Highways 29 and 53 had re-opened.
Martin said all residents are accounted for.
One person has been injured and is being treated for burns.
Several tankers and engines have responded to the Cache Fire, including vehicles from CAL FIRE and the Lake County Fire Protection District.
It was listed as 0% contained as of Wednesday afternoon.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
