There’s a new mayor in the Town of Windsor after Dominic Foppoli resigned last month amid numerous sexual assault allegations.
The Windsor Town Council on Wednesday appointed longtime Vice Mayor Sam Salmon to replace Dominic Foppoli – this despite overwhelming public support for Rosa Reynoza, who was sworn in as the newest council member.
During public comments, nearly every caller backed Reynoza and asked that she become mayor due to a lack of trust in sitting members after Foppoli’s sexual assault allegations were made public.
"To see pictures of (Reynoza) out helping people at the food bank and doing community things. The picture I see of our current Town Council and Dominic Foppoli’s birthday party," one man pointed out.
Meanwhile, Councilmembers Debora Fudge and Esther Lemus, herself an accuser of Foppoli, overlooked the public’s opinion and nominated Salmon for the role, citing stability and experience. "I have personal anger toward Dominic and what all of us have been through, and in the face of all that, (Salmon) has really risen to the occasion," Fudge said.
The vote was 3-1 in favor of. Salmon.
"I’ll take on these charges and try to be inclusive, make sure I support my councilmembers and make sure that I support you in the community," Salmon said after taking the oath of office.
Next, the Windsor Town Council will choose whether to hold a special election for Salmon’s now empty seat or appoint a replacement. Discussions will continue at the council’s next meeting June 16.
