One person is dead and five others, including three children, are recovering from injuries after a vehicle crashed into a hospital emergency room in Austin, Texas.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. local time Tuesday at St. David's North Austin Medical Center, according to police.

Reports indicate the driver of the vehicle was killed in the crash. Their identity was not immediately released.

Two children and three adults were also injured, according to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services. One child suffered serious injuries and one adult was described as having potentially life-threatening injuries; the other injuries are said to be non life-threatening. Four of the victims were transferred to other facilities for treatment while the fifth was treated on-site.

Although details surrounding the crash are still being investigated, the Austin Police Department says it's believed to have been an accident.

"There is no threat to the general public. Based off preliminary information and details gathered at this time, this incident does not appear to be an intentional act," police said in a statement.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott addressed the situation on X, saying the state is prepared to give full support and "ensure Austin has no unmet needs."

Initial reports from the scene indicated as many as 20 people may have been injured. That figure was quickly revised, with authorities saying additional patients from the hospital who were not involved in the crash were transported to other facilities to alleviate some strain on the hospital as a result of the incident.
