In a release on Tuesday following the FDA's approval of the second booster, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlined updated booster recommendations.
The new booster would be accessible to "certain immunocompromised individuals and people over the age of 50 who received an initial booster dose at least 4 months ago to be eligible for another mRNA booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19," the health agency wrote.
"Separately and in addition, based on newly published data, adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months ago may now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine," the release continued.
As the latest COVID-19 surge due to the BA.2 subvariant continues across Europe, this second round of boosters is anticipated to better protect the older members of the population from severe disease when the surge makes its way to the United States.
"During the recent Omicron surge, those who were boosted were 21-times less likely to die from COVID-19 compared to those who were unvaccinated, and 7-times less likely to be hospitalized," said the CDC on Tuesday.
For those seeking to get their next round of booster shots in the Bay Area, there are several options, including the state-run website at myturn.ca.gov. The site provides residents with information on various sites that administer COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots. People can also check vaccines.gov.
If recipients are searching locally, each Bay Area county health department offers different options for vaccination on their websites.
People can also schedule appointments through pharmacies and retail outlets, like CVS and Walgreens, or through their healthcare providers, like Kaiser Permanente.
