How did six dead bodies end up on a stretch of highway in California? It’s a question that officials are dealing with following the Tuesday night discovery.
Victor Valley News Group reported Wednesday that officials confirmed one more body was found. Initial reports said five bodies were found on the roadway, near Highway 395 and Shadow Mountain Road in the small town of El Mirage, around 50 miles south of Los Angeles. FOX News said that the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office received a call for a welfare check there at around 8:15 p.m.
It appears that there was a shooting incident that resulted in the fatalities, but “uncertainty lingers” according to Victory Valley News Group, which said the bodies may have been placed at the scene post-mortem. There were also two vehicles found at the scene and at least one had bullet holes, said FOX.
“Although the fire crew was ready to call for helicopter assistance, this plan was abandoned following the tragic confirmation that there were no survivors from the shooting incident, leading to the cancellation of the air support,” said the outlet.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Mara Rodriguez said in a Wednesday press conference shared by FOX that further information about the investigation is expected to be released by Thursday. She said investigators were still taking in evidence.

“Unfortunately, I don’t have an exact estimate on that for you,” said Rodriguez. “She also said “it’s going to be heartbreaking, whatever the situation is, what they discover out there as far as the circumstances surrounding it.”
Rodriguez told reporters she could not recall the last time there was a homicide investigation for six individuals in the county.
