A six-year old girl was killed during a mass shooting Friday in Southeast Washington D.C., according to NBC 4.
Police said five adults were also shot during the incident, which erupted at approximately 11 p.m. outside a liquor store and convenience store at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X Avenues Southeast. Those shot included two women and three men.
Officers heard gunfire and then saw people rushing towards them after the shooting, said NBC 4.
The six-year-old was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The adults who were shot are being treated and are expected to recover, according to police.
Authorities believe the shooter fled the scene in a car. As of Saturday, it was unclear if there was more than one gunman involved.
Following the shooting, crime scene tape blocked off Mart Liquor and other storefronts in the area as detectives investigated. Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia Executive Assistant Police Chief Ashan Benedict has asked the public for help finding the shooter or shooters.
"There’s too much gun violence, still, perpetuated in this city and too many children are being harmed — innocent children — by gunfire," Benedict said. "Please help the police department and our detectives bring those people to justice and help bring some closure to the families."
