80-year-old man dies at Grand Canyon after boat flips

The National Park Service shared on Thursday that an 80-year-old man died last weekend after his boat flipped on the Colorado River while visiting Grand Canyon National Park.

The incident happened on Sunday at around 3:40 p.m. near Fossil Rapid on the Colorado River, the park shared in a press release.

Those with the man contacted emergency services, alerting the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center by satellite phone. Those with him attempted CPR but were unsuccessful.

“Despite the efforts of the group and park rangers flown in by helicopter, all resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful,” the National Park Service said.

The victim has not yet been identified by authorities. His death is currently under investigation by the Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

This is now the fourth death at the park this month, according to the National Parks Service.
