An Alabama woman required medical assistance after an incident outside the Phoenix II Condominiums in Orange Beach.
A beach umbrella was hurdled through the air by a gust of wind and impaled her leg.
First responders from the Orange Beach Fire Department reported the woman, who was unidentified other than to say she is elderly, is in stable condition, but they also said it’s not an injury they have ever seen before.
OBFD Deputy Chief Jeff Smith told reporters that the removal of impaled objects is not in their purview, and is a task better left for doctors.
As a result, they had to cut both ends of the umbrella off in order to stabilize her, according to WALA/Gray News.
Smith cautioned beachgoers that umbrellas shouldn’t be left on the beach unattended when the weather turns less hospitable.
“The services down there do a good job of trying to remove them when bad weather’s coming in but sometimes when storms pop up, gust of wind pops up. It’s happened in the past — not to this extent, but we have had injuries relating to umbrellas in the past,” Smith said, according to WALA/Gray News.
