PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A rumor circulating on social media earlier this month alleged hackers were adding unknown Amazon locker addresses, labeled as “pickup locations,” to people’s accounts without their permission.

However, the company said in an email to Snopes, a fact-checking website, that it was only an internal error.

Amazon said it was made aware of this hiccup from users posting to Facebook and other outlets.

Users claimed the added locations were fraudulently labeled and not official Amazon pickup locations, but rather addresses that could be accessed by the hackers, allowing them to order things via their account and get them delivered to the newly logged spot.

Snopes said the addresses shared in all of the social media posts were legitimate pickup locations for Amazon Locker, Amazon Hub Locker, Amazon Fresh, and Amazon Counter, despite users saying they were illegitimate.

The fact-checking site also found that, of the users who posted about this issue, no unauthorized purchases were made on their accounts.

Amazon sent a message to Snopes saying it had no evidence of a security breach and its systems remain secure.

Further, the company said the addresses had been added to users’ accounts in error and that it is “working to fix the issue.”
