Former presidential and New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang intends to create a new political party to run for office, no longer identifying as a Democrat, POLITICO sources reported.
The announcement could accompany the release of his book next month, entitled Forward: Notes on the Future of Our Democracy.
Book publisher Crown called Yang’s book a condemnation of the country’s “institutional failures,” including the CDC’s “slow and cumbersome response” to COVID-19, wealth inequality, the disappearance of local journalism, police brutality, and “legislative gridlock and dysfunction.”
Early readers said the former businessman’s book offers solutions: his well-known universal basic income, Congressional term limits, tax breaks for journalism, and ranked-choice voting like New York City enacted in the recent election Yang lost.
Universal basic income would offer American citizens a monthly $1,000 check for basic needs. However, Democratic and Republican members were hesitant to agree with or support the idea.
The unnamed party’s role in the 2022 midterms or 2024 presidential election is unclear, but Yang’s supporters have dubbed themselves the “Yang Gang.”
After the New Hampshire primary, Yang dropped out of the 2020 presidential race. He attempted to merge his NYC mayoral campaign with a competitor after polling poorly near the end.
“This extended stump speech is unlikely to draw many new members to the Yang Gang,” said Publishers Weekly.
