Around 200,000 Jeep hybrids recalled over fire risk

The vehicle manufacturer Stellantis announced on Monday that it would be recalling around 200,000 Jeep plug-in hybrids over a fire risk.

In a press release, the company said that the recall would affect its 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe SUVs. In total, around 5% of the affected vehicles may have a defect that causes them to catch fire.

“A routine company review of customer data led to an internal investigation that discovered 13 fires,” Stellantis said in the release. “All vehicles were parked and turned off.”

The company said that the risk of the vehicles catching fire is reduced when the “battery charge level is depleted.”

The recall comes as Stellantis issued another last month, which affected 1.5 million Ram pickup trucks that were suffering software issues that could affect the electronic stability control system.

As for this latest recall, Stellantis said that a fix for the issue is not yet known but that those impacted will receive notice “when they may schedule service.”

For the time being, “owners are advised to refrain from recharging. Out of an abundance of caution, the company is also advising owners of these vehicles to park away from structures or other vehicles until the remedy is obtained,” the release shared.
